CROATIA (REPUBLIKA HRVATSKA), Republic of Croatia - state in SouthEastern Europe. Square - 56 538 sq.km. Population - 4 282 216. Capital - Zagreb. On south Croatia borders upon Bosnia. On east Croatia borders upon Serbia. On north Croatia borders upon Hungary and Slovenia. Greek colonies established along the Dalmatian coast beginning with the fourth century BC. The interior was then dominated by tribal peoples, with the Celts most significant just before the Roman conquest. Slavic migrations reached Croatia beginning in the 6th century. Tomislav have been crowned Croatias first king in 924 or 925. In middle ages Croatia was by controversies arena and wars between neighboring powers: Byzantine, Venice, Hungary. With 1090 a control over Dalmatia ( part of Croatia) took Venice. Other part connected to Hungary on autonomy rights. With the Latin occupation of the Byzantine Empire in 1204, Ragusa became an independent city state. Venice retained Dalmatia until Napoleon occupied and extinguished the Venetian Republic in 1797. In 1522 the Croatian nobility invited Austrian Archduke Ferdinand of Habsburg to stick up for country from turkish inroads. So Croatia began by part of Hubsburg empire. After Austro-Hungary disintegration in December 1918, was created a new state is Serbs kingdom, Croats and Slovenes (with 1929 is Yugoslavia). In 1941 Yugoslavia was occupied German, Italian and Hungarian armies. Nazis permitted to Croatian nationalists to proclaim Croatia and Bosnia independence. After completion of Second World war, the Yugoslavia borders were restored. In June 1991 a Federal republic Yugoslavia disintegrated on ethnic states. Began subethnic and religious wars. In spite of UNO armies lead-in in 1992, war on Balkans continued until 14 December 1995. Monetry system : 1 Croatian kuna HRK = 100 lipas.
