CZECH REPUBLIC (Ceska Republika) - the state in Central Europe. Area - 78 866 sq.km. Population - 10 272 179. Сapital - Praha. On north Czhech Rep. is bordered upon Poland. On west Czhech Rep. is bordered upon Germany. On south Czhech Rep. is bordered upon Austria. On east Czhech Rep. is bordered upon Slovakia. Once part of the Holy Roman Empire and, later, the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Czechoslovakia became an independent nation at the end of World War I. Independence ended with the German takeover in 1939. After World War II, Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Currency: 1 koruna (CZK) = 100 haleru.
